Care & installation

Couture Atelier’s mica wallcoverings demand precision, reverence, and a commitment to preservation. These are not mere surfaces—they are heirlooms in waiting, crafted with the same meticulousness as a bespoke garment. Their care begins at installation and continues through decades of use. The following guide is a non-negotiable covenant between the material and its keeper.

Substrate Preparation

The foundation must be flawless. Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or residual adhesives. Any imperfection in the surface will be magnified by the reflective nature of mica. Apply a thin, even layer of sizing or primer to create a smooth, non-porous base. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding. This step is not optional—it is the first act of devotion to the material’s integrity.

Paste Type and Application

Use a high-quality, water-based paste formulated for mineral-based finishes. Avoid starch-based pastes, which may degrade over time. Apply the paste sparingly with a wide, flat trowel, ensuring even coverage without pooling. Excess paste can lead to uneven adhesion and long-term discoloration. Work in sections, pressing the mica firmly into place to eliminate air pockets. The paste must bond the material to the wall without compromising its delicate structure.

Seam Handling

Seams require surgical precision. Align the edges of adjacent panels with a ruler or laser guide, ensuring a perfect match. Use a seam roller with a smooth, non-abrasive surface to press the seam flat. Avoid stretching or pulling the material, as this can distort the mica’s alignment. For complex patterns or irregular wall shapes, use a utility knife to trim excess material, leaving a margin of at least 1/8 inch for adjustment. Seal seams with a thin layer of paste, then smooth with the roller to ensure continuity.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean the surface with a soft microfiber cloth and distilled water. Never use abrasive sponges, solvents, or acidic cleaners, which can erode the mica’s luster. For persistent stains, apply a mild, pH-neutral detergent diluted in water, then blot gently. Avoid saturating the material—excess moisture can seep into the substrate and compromise adhesion. Wipe in a single direction to prevent streaking. Clean no more than once every six months, unless soiling is unavoidable.

Light Exposure and Protection

Direct sunlight is the enemy of mica’s brilliance. Install UV-filtering window films or use sheer curtains to diffuse light. Prolonged exposure to unfiltered sunlight can cause discoloration and degradation of the material’s reflective properties. In rooms with high light exposure, rotate the wallcovering’s orientation annually to ensure even wear. Avoid placing objects with sharp edges or heat-emitting sources (e.g., lamps, radiators) in direct contact with the surface.

Lifespan and Long-Term Care

With proper installation and maintenance, mica wallcoverings can endure for 25–30 years. Their longevity hinges on three principles: consistency in care, avoidance of extremes (humidity, heat, or physical trauma), and periodic inspection for signs of wear. Reapply a thin layer of paste to seams every five years to reinforce adhesion. Never attempt to remove or alter the wallcovering without professional guidance. Its value lies not in utility but in its ability to outlast generations.
